- What it is
- What it covers
- How much it costs each month
- Who can get it
- Common questions
What is Native American Health Insurance?
Native American health insurance is a special kind of health plan. It gives you many benefits, like no costs for doctor visits, prescriptions, or hospital stays.
Example of a Native American health insurance card:
Notice the zero-cost sharing benefits circled in green.
You also have access to many doctors and hospitals without needing referrals from your tribal clinic to see specialists.
Health Care Coverage
This insurance covers important health services, like:
- Doctor visits
- Emergency services
- Hospital stays
- Prescription drugs
- Care for pregnant women and newborns
- More health coverage
Example of someone using this plan:
Jane qualifies for and is enrolled in Native American health insurance. She gets into an accident and takes an ambulance to the emergency room.
After the doctor checks her injuries, she is diagnosed with a broken arm, treated, and prescribed pain medication.
The emergency room and the pharmacy bill her insurance. Jane’s insurance will fully cover her bills if she is in their network and her plan covers her care. She will not have to pay out of pocket for these services.

You can see the out-of-pocket costs are zeroed out.
Monthly Premiums
The cost you pay each month depends on a few things. It depends on things like your income, how many people are in your family, if you use tobacco, and where you live.
Choosing an Insurance Company
When picking a plan, know that benefits are the same with all companies. But the doctors and hospitals you can use might be different. Some plans might cost more but allow you to see more doctors.
Using Your Benefits
After you sign up, you get an insurance card. Use this card when you go to the doctor or hospital.
By doing so, you will be able to use your zero cost sharing benefits.
Referrals
If you pick a PPO plan, you don’t need referrals to see specialists.
Some HMO insurance plans in Oklahoma may not require referrals.
Do You Qualify?
You must be a member of a federally recognized tribe. The Marketplace asks American Indian and Alaska Natives to provide a picture of their documentation. This can be done by submitting an image of one of the following to the Marketplace:
- Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood card (CDIB)
- Tribal Card
- Other Documentation
You may not qualify for this insurance if you have a government plan. This includes plans like Medicare or Medicaid.
If you get health insurance through your employer, you may not be eligible for Native American health insurance.
You also need to meet income guidelines.
If your family’s income is in the green section, you may qualify for Native American health insurance.
If you earn less money, you may qualify for SoonerCare. If you earn more money, we will help you look at a different plan.
Special Enrollment Periods (SEP)
You can sign up for Native American health insurance at any time of the year. You can also change plans once a month. Non-tribal members applying with a tribal member can use the SEP.
